Which Jobs Face the Greatest Risk?
Not every occupation faces the same level of disruption. A 2025 study by the International Labour Organization and Poland's NASK estimated that around one in four jobs worldwide has some degree of exposure to generative AI. Importantly, the researchers concluded that transformation of jobs is more likely than complete replacement, with clerical occupations among the most exposed.

However, this does not necessarily mean entire professions will disappear. More often, specific tasks within those professions are likely to become automated.

Why Human Skills Will Remain Essential
Despite impressive advances, today's AI systems still have important limitations.
Current AI systems can produce sophisticated outputs, but they can still make errors, misunderstand context and require human oversight. They also do not carry the professional responsibility, lived experience or accountability that human workers do.

Similarly, businesses rely on human leadership during uncertainty, where judgement extends beyond data. OECD research published in 2026 finds that problem-solving, creativity, innovation, communication, and managerial capabilities remain important alongside growing digital and AI-related skills.
The Rise of Human-AI Collaboration
Rather than replacing workers entirely, AI is increasingly becoming a productivity partner.
Doctors use AI to detect diseases earlier.
Lawyers use AI to review thousands of documents in minutes.
Engineers employ AI to optimise designs.
Journalists use AI for research while maintaining editorial judgement.
Programmers use AI assistants to accelerate software development.
This pattern is consistent with OECD evidence showing that in many highly AI-exposed occupations, AI can complement workers rather than simply replace them, while increasing demand for higher-level skills.
In each case, humans remain responsible for verification, ethical decisions and final accountability.
The future workplace may therefore resemble collaboration rather than replacement.
New Jobs Will Also Be Created
Every major technological revolution has created occupations that previously did not exist.
AI is already generating demand for:

The World Economic Forum's Future of Jobs Report 2025 identifies AI and machine-learning specialists, big-data specialists, and other technology-related roles among the fastest-growing occupations. Across all major labour-market trends—not AI alone—the report projects 170 million new roles and 92 million displaced roles by 2030, producing a net increase of 78 million jobs.
Entire industries may emerge around maintaining, regulating, and improving AI systems.
History suggests that innovation rarely eliminates work altogether—it changes the nature of work.
Education Must Change
Perhaps the greatest challenge is not AI itself but whether education systems can adapt quickly enough.
Many schools still prepare students for repetitive tasks that intelligent software can increasingly perform.

The World Economic Forum also estimates that nearly 40% of skills required on the job could change by 2030, reinforcing the importance of continuous reskilling and lifelong learning.
Countries investing in education today may gain significant competitive advantages tomorrow.
The Global Competition for AI Talent
The future of work is also becoming a geopolitical issue.
Stanford's AI Index 2026 notes that national AI strategies are expanding globally even as production of leading AI models remains heavily concentrated in the United States and China. Countries leading AI research are simultaneously competing for highly skilled workers, advanced semiconductor manufacturing, and digital infrastructure.
Nations capable of producing world-class AI talent may enjoy stronger productivity, faster innovation and greater economic resilience.
Meanwhile, countries that fail to modernise education and digital infrastructure risk widening technological gaps.
The competition for skilled workers may become almost as important as the competition for natural resources.

Risks That Cannot Be Ignored
The AI transition also presents significant challenges.

A Pakistan Perspective
For countries like Pakistan, AI presents both opportunity and risk.
A young population offers significant potential if digital skills, software development, cloud computing, and AI education receive sustained investment.
Pakistan has already begun formalising this ambition through its National AI Policy 2025. The policy sets a target of training one million new and existing IT graduates in AI and allied technologies by 2027, alongside 10,000 new trainers, and calls for greater integration of AI and data science into education and workforce-development programmes.
World Bank analysis of South Asia also suggests that AI's labour-market effects will be uneven: routine cognitive and business-service tasks face greater exposure, while many jobs may benefit from AI-human complementarity and productivity gains.
AI could improve healthcare, agriculture, customs administration, education, and financial services while supporting entrepreneurship and export-oriented technology industries.
However, failure to invest in digital infrastructure and workforce training could widen the gap between Pakistan and leading technological economies.
The challenge is not whether AI will arrive—it already has. The challenge is whether the workforce will be prepared.
